planned to do so much today. but slept thru them all.
pretty draggy going to school to collect the gown. Thought it'd be a fast pick up but spent 2 hours there in the end. quite stressful due to the semi-chaos, pple everywhere, booths/tables everywhere, counter pple talking in a barely audible express tone.
not really looking forward to commencement. queuing for hours to get a scroll. shaking hands and smiling with the boss whom i've never seen. smiling at the cameras. taking pictures everywhere in the gown, more smiling. seems quite lame.
managed to squeeze in half hr of unicycling before it got too dark. jia you jia you.
the blackout was quite exciting. Mom was changing and thought i switched off the toilet lights. Maid was bathing. My first thought was there's a trip again(!?), followed by "it wasn't me!". Anyhow we soon realised the entire neighbourhood was out too. it was a nice sight seeing the neighbours wandering outside on the road with torches. It was so quiet without all the noise from the TV, fans etc that we could hear our neighbours talking in their houses.
Out came all the torches and candles. My parents have a huge collection of torches, many accumulated from years of NDP celebrations. So many different sizes and different colored beams. And only a few actually worked.
The nightsky was nice outside. Quite enjoyable wandering around. Without power the atmosphere had a different feel. Very peaceful.
takes a power failure to make me realise the things i take for granted. one thing that hit me after the excitement died down was absolute boredom. Suddenly there's no TV, no internet, no radio, can't read, can't bathe. The only activity left is sitting in front of the candle wondering what to do next. I started analyzing the flame. Is a flame a gas? it's definitely not solid or liquid. How does it work? Like is it burning the wax or the wick? I suppose the wax fuels it but you know..like how. How does the flame become so stable. what is the flame really?
The other unbearable component of the power failure is the heat. it was so hot. Bless the fans and air cons of the world. I can probably live without the air con, not as tai tai as that, but without the fan it's pretty hard. I was contemplating taking out my lighted juggling equipment out to play (what other better occasion than this!) but the heat stopped me. I wasn't gonna do anything that generates heat.
so we all just sat around the candle in the living room stoning, with me fanning myself with the newspapers. Brought me back to the olden days. Went to the chinatown heritage museum a few weeks back and they had exhibits of how the pple there lived years ago. I think it's something similar. It must be really hot then too, and there're just sitting around dim lamps fanning themselves and stoning.
my gown is extra small, and my mortar board is extra large. Am I Madam Big head or what.
