Off To Cambodia (Again)

flying off next week.
Leaving in the middle of super peak period at work so not really prepared for it.
it should be a good break,
the past month has been unheathily devoted to work.

boss went for hols last week and is back this week.

"He's gonna come back and go 'Darn! you mean the thing's not been shipped yet!'" I told my colleague.
"Don't be surprise if these issues are still open even when YOu get back" she replied.

-------------------------------------

HJ one of my cambodia teammates asked if we've been to S21, the Khmer rougue holocaust musuem.

"Of course, we've been there twice. Haven't you been there? I thought all groups go there"
"Yes, i think we should go again" she said thoughtfully.

the rest of us looked at her, horrified.

"You've just been fired as recreational IC"
"Yes pls tell us what day you plan to take us there, I'll take over the planning of that day"

-----------------------------------------

Saw a video clip of the cambodia stampede on news the other day.
the clip is on youtube as well.
not something i'll watch again, and not an image you'll forget for a while.

---------------------------------------------

Just spent the entire saturday sleeping.
literally the entire day.
all my sleep debt cleared.

have an urge to listen to country music and now i'm nostalgic again.
Was never a fan of country music,
the only thing i knew abt it was the guys always wear cowboy hats.
i grew to accept it only at huntsville because that's all the radio played all day.

The charm of country music is the lyrics.
Most of the songs reflect the love, family values and simplicity of country pple.

they are very simple pple.
i miss the small town charm.

I remember the saturday i spent at Fluff's house.
a place in the middle of ACRES of land.

he let me drive his brand new tractor,
something that Wayne couldn't believe when i told him at work the next day because Wayne knew how precious the new tractor was to Fluf.

I carried hay from one end of the farm to the other,
passing the pond where "his uncle died when the tractor toppled into the lake".

Fluf hopped on and we drove through the jungle on his land,
and he told me stories of how his brothers and him used to run through and climb trees in the jungle.

We went to an empty clearing (still on his land),
where he brought out his rifles and pistols and i practised shooting targets because he couldn't believe i've never touched a gun before.

I got a giant bruise from the kickback (or whatever it's called).

(it did fleetingly cross my mind that if he killed me there, no one will really know)

I played with the dozens of kittens at his home while his extremely friendly elderly mother kept passing me food.

We fished in his pond where i got badly sunburnt.
Well actually, it's more like i held on to the rod because he was the one putting the bait and swinging it out and unhooking the fish.

we drove out to the little cliffs and lakes where his brothers used to swim in when they were young and we climbed up goodness-knows-how-many-storey-high towers (i think they were electrical posts or watch towers or something) to have a bird's eye view on everything.

In the night his brothers and more family members came by and we gathered at his porch,
in pitch darkness,
and shot fireworks.
(again because fluf couldn't believe i've never set off fireworks before)

-----------------------------------------

oh gosh.
all the stories are coming back.

Al, the lab manager who shopped for a 2nd hand car with me,
even driving the car back to the office where the techs did one of those F1 moves in the empty carpark to test the car.

Al, who went fishing with me, and drove me to a casino 4 hrs away, and marshalled me to the car repair shop when the engine belt burst and it was in danger of catching fire.

the moments when the radio played Rascal Flatt's "bless the broken road" and Tim McGraw's "live like you were dying" while i was driving and being able to immerse in the peace of the moment.

also the time when the two singaporean (one indian and one chinese) managers came by and we drove to even further out the countryside.

We stopped by a small restaurant, the typical country style kind, to eat.

the expression of the pple in there were priceless.
they obviously don't have many customers from outside town.
I could even see eyes peeping out from the kitchen door window panel,
we were like aliens that descended.

this is one country song i'm completely hooked on:

And Rosseau, the guy who placed a little angel doll on my desk one day near christmas.
i happened to be quite homesick then
(christmas in the country is like our chinese new year. a time for families to gather and reunite by the fireplace. it's not at all like christmas in singapore)

the angel meant a lot more than he thought.
i still have the angel in my room today.

sigh.
huntsville huntsville,
the place with big town facilites and small town charm.
