the clown strikes back
should i quit? Affirmative!
sat wasn't as bad as i thought. i was still a clown, but given the freedom to do what i want and not stick to silly slapstick i'm not comfy with.
so all i had to do, was walk the length of orchard road. 4 times. With 2 guys in advertisement sandwich boards in front of me, 2 stiltwalkers in costume at the side, and the percussion band behind. i thought it was a great idea for an advertisement. The band provided audio impact, the stiltwalkers visual impact and me, er...motion impact?
we were like a mini chingay parade. or maybe a funeral procession in a morbid way. at one point i was thinking "hey this looks like a good idea for my funeral!" it's pretty hard to be sad when the band is playing joyous samba music.
so for the very first time, i got to dance while crossing the road at Orchard. i got to jump around waving at bus passengers and kachiao passers by. i was wearing a mask too so i got the additional freedom of annoymity. splendid.
it was really tiring though. each walk took an hour to complete (so i was juggling non stop for an hr!) and we had 4 to do in the afternoon heat. the first walk you could see us all nice and energetic, being cheeky and happy. by the 4th one we were all damn sian and tired already. haha. the stiltwalkers stopped doing their little funny mimes and i was skipping much lesser and dropping much more.
but it was all good fun. managed to scape some skin off my finger doing flourishes (MJ: good thing you didn't do extended flourish. otherwise every finger will have some skin scaped off). Also found many mini bruises on my arm, probably from rolling my sleeves up too much. i look like i kana abused. Dead tired after the gig (fell asleep watching telly in my grandfather's house. how embarassing) and mom said i was radiating heat. woke up today absolutely aching, esp my arms. but yeah, other than that, it was good fun.
the 2 sandwich boards guy had no idea they were sandwich boards until they got to the road show. so they were quite embarassed. i got to know the 2 stiltwalkers as well. One goes down for juggling occasionally, while the other is a shao nu sha shou. He's cute, talkative, cheeky and most importantly, funny. hehehha...he's only 18 though, so only paedophiles need apply. but i can imagine him melting all the young ladies' hearts.
anyway those 2 belonged to the category of strangers with instantaneous rapport. The cute guy wondered why a graduate would want to juggle (or rather, why a juggler would want to graduate. doesn't take a degree to do this). We started talking abt gigs and he mentioned "this is a great job dun you think? it's not really working, just having fun most of the time. and we get paid! but the one thing is that you must have thick skin. cannot be paisei. if you can be thick skinned no problem." How true. That's probably one justification for the somewhat high rates for doing such gigs then. It's not really abt being talented (these skills can be picked up fairly easily), i think the major barrier to entry is embarassment in front of the public. i guess i'm lucky that i dun have such inhibitions. isn't it wonderful to be able to do things like dance across the road? :) Esp when i'm in a group and clown costume, i'm given a licence to be weird! i'm expected to be weird! and pple smile instead of stare!
the stiltwalkers were really good too. i've always thought stiltwalkers quite zuo bo one, just walk around, though i admire their courage. stiltwalking is more dangerous (but easier to learn) than unicycling cos once you fall backwards, habis. And in a crowded area, it's nervewracking cos you dun know when someone might push you. (or drop clubs in front of you. which i did. dropped clubs in front of one of them 3 times. 3 times he got a blardy shock. oops.) Anyway the 2 guys that day were great. they weren't just walking, esp the cheeky guy. He was waving at pple, tapping their heads secretly from behind, and doing funny little mimes. he's a natural.
Jon the agent turned out to be a nice fella too. provided everything from lunch to water to costumes. he looks quite scary (and he eats fire professionally) but after talking to him a bit he's alright.
oh yes, i was on channel 5 news for a split second yesterday. the crew was there to cover the roadshow and there was a really short snippet of the stiltwalkers and me.
--------------------------------------------
still on sat but a separate issue. we had lunch at the far east top storey, some eating stalls there. the chicken rice eating place had the skinniest chickens i had ever seen. they were hanging up all the bones! i'm not sure if those were chickens after or before they had taken the meat out but they were ALL bones. They look like Fann wongs!
the service was alright. we were still in clown costume and we managed to convince the auntie that we were filming a movie. We looked like clowns who just escaped from the circus. splendid.
------------------------------------
i think if i did this long term, all my rats will start screaming. but as a short term thing, i can't ask for more. Getting paid to do crazy things i enjoy. Not that i get a lot of gigs. and wait till i get a crappy slapstick gig...then i'll start feeling annoyed abt clowning again.....
